Acts 1: 15-17, 21-end

Matthias replaces Judas

15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.” 21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

Jesus prays for the disciples – John 17: 6-19 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[c] that name you gave me.

None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth. 18

As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Thought for the Day

How often and how deeply do we take a good loving look at ourselves? By that I mean looking back to what we once used to be before we came to know anything much about Jesus or God the father let alone the Holy Spirit. I have tried to look back in my own life and I must admit it is quite tough to do because not only are there some particular traits that I like to think have been discarded but still come out to some extent when ‘the chips are down’ but also I don’t really care to imagine how I used to think about things or react to things because my outlook has hopefully changed so much.

Just think about Jesus disciples who were guided in his direction by his Father’s influence and who would have been just the same as any other fisherman or farm labourer. Their lives must have changed so much as a result of just being in Jesus’ company let alone witnessing his miracles and being taught personally by him. Jesus stresses this in his prayer that they are no longer ‘of the world anymore’.

Now he is in knowledge off his imminent death and departure from his life on earth and is sending his disciples out in his place. By doing this they will be taking his name and teachings out to the peoples at large and by doing so will be glorifying both him and God the Father. He isn’t saying that they are perfect by any means and one of his main concerns is that in his absence the father will protect them from ‘the evil one’ that is Satan or the devil.

We might wonder why this should be when surely they must be so much stronger people now.

What do you think?

Let us Pray

Heavenly Father we too ask for your protection from evil as we take up our lives in your service. May we glorify you and the Son and the Holy Spirit in all that we think or do or say. May our faith remain strong even when we are called to act in ways that seem to be against the ways of the world and yet we know are just as you have taught us. Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future.

We ask that you help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Priest and believe you will send one best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith. Amen
The Blessing

May Christ our King pour upon us the abundance of his gifts and bring us to reign with him in glory; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be among us and remain with us always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

Eternal God, giver of love and power, your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world to preach the gospel of his kingdom: confirm us in this mission, and help us to live the good news we proclaim;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
