Bible Readings

 Zechariah 9: 9-12

Matthew 11: 16-19,25-30

“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:”

“‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon. ’The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Thought for the Day

Alka-Seltzer speedy Alka-Seltzer! Don’t delay because relief is on the way!!
Perhaps you’re too young to remember that advert but later on I have a more meaningful version for you.

Both of our readings this Sunday embody the concepts of peace and liberation. The reading from the book of Zechariah, the penultimate book of the Old Testament, is about the coming of a new king riding into Jerusalem-a passage we hear on Palm Sunday every Easter. This king is The Messiah and heralds peaceful victory for Israel over neighbouring nations and freedom for all Jews captured and held prisoner.

Alongside this we learn that only Jesus has the true and full knowledge of God the Father and that only the Father has the true and full knowledge of Jesus, the Son. So Jesus was and is the only source of the truth about our Father/Creator God and thus holds the key to what life should be like in the Kingdom of God.

Whilst the excerpts from Matthew may sound quite diverse, the basic theme especially in the latter part, is an expression of freedom in a more personal light. This is to be gained by becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ and handing over our self-generated stresses and strains of life to him in return for our entire reliance upon him in the future.

This doesn’t mean that all of our worries and concerns will disappear of course but our immersion into a new life following Jesus will put these things into perspective and likewise our capacity to deal with them will develop and grow.

‘Come to me all you who are wearied and burdened’ says Jesus ‘and I will give you rest and relief.’
Yes the truth for us is that following the ways and teachings Jesus will bring us ‘express relief’ for all of our cares, worries and concerns. He won’t pile on extra worries, difficulties or hardships but instead promises us a new ability to thrive and cope with life and rest for our bodies, minds and souls! Don’t delay – relief is on the way!!

AMEN

Let us Pray

Dear Lord your we ask that you place your yoke upon our shoulders and take away the burdens and baggage that we struggle to carry around with us. Renew and reinvigorate our lives Lord as we strive to live as your disciples building up the Kingdom Of God in your name and to your glory.

Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future. We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Rector and believe you will send us a priest best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith.

Amen
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer
