The First Hymn
Welcome!

The New Year is about new beginnings, and in our Services we will be remembering the beginnings of Jesus’ ministry. This week we recall his first public appearance which took place at his baptism. In a humble action, Jesus laid the foundation of all future teaching and miracles.

Psalm 29

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendour.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, "Glory!"
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia.
Christ was revealed in flesh,
proclaimed among the nations
and believed in
throughout the world!

The Collect Prayer

Heavenly Father,
at the Jordan you revealed Jesus
as your Son:
may we recognize him
as our Lord and know ourselves
to be your beloved children;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 3: 15-17, 21-22 (Jesus’ first public appearance and baptism.)

The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. John answered them all, ‘I baptise you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’

When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’

Thought for the Day

Many have speculated about what Jesus did before he burst on the scene as an adult preacher. Some have Jesus travelling far and wide, from England to India. Others have him staying local and working as a carpenter. All this is speculation and legend. What we do know is that a would-be preacher/healer had to wait until they were thirty before they could have a public ministry. Whatever Jesus got up to before his first public appearance, it prepared him for an incredibly profound and mature moment.

The first time the crowds saw Jesus, they did not see him commanding the stage or dazzling them with miracles. Instead they saw a humble and unassuming man submitting himself to the ministry of another man – John the Baptist. Through his baptism, Jesus was aligning himself with the hopes and prayers of the crowds who were longing for a new beginning – a new focus for faith, a new understanding of God, a new direction for religion. Jesus aligned himself with all who were tired of the abusive and burdensome exercising of power, and who longed for the Kingdom of God. And Jesus did this by allowing John to lower him under the waters of the river Jordan, and to lift him up into a new world. As we contemplate this act of submission, soon it dawns on us that this was a sign of the mastery Jesus had over communication. In a simple act Jesus had preached the most eloquent of sermons and had performed the most amazing of miracles. In one act, Jesus had shown the supremacy of the very alternative life people were longing for. His action is a precursor of his teaching where he would declare ‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.’ It is no wonder that immediately after his baptism, the Holy Spirit was seen to rest on Jesus as his Father declared, ‘You are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’

In months to come, as we journey with Jesus through the Gospel stories, we would do well to remember Jesus’ baptism and its message. And then, as we attempt to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, at every step Jesus’ baptism reminds us to always start with some act of humility.

Let us Pray

God of grace and glory, you call us to be your people, faithful and courageous. As your beloved Son embraced his mission in the waters of baptism, inspire us with the fire of your Spirit to join in his transforming work. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Creator God, at the start of this New Year when thoughts turn again to beginnings, be with us as we gaze into the distance of fresh mission grounds, of hopes and dreams, opportunities for service and challenges. Take our fears and turn them into strengths. Take our lack of faith and empower us through the Spirit who breathes life into this world. Lord, walk with us into this New Year of opportunity. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

May the light of the glorious gospel of Christ shine in our hearts and fill our lives with his joy and peace. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always.

Amen.
