The First Hymn
Welcome!

Have you ever invited a friend to church, and they have asked, “Why? What’s in it for me?’? We who love going to church find these questions odd. We might want to reply that meeting God in worship is like meeting a great friend. No excuses for meeting need to be given. But to answer the honest enquirer, we might suggest a sense of peace, forgiveness and wellbeing as highly likely outcomes. This week I want to suggest another benefit: Empowerment.

Psalm 139: 1-10

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

Acclamation

Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning
our song to Thee be raised

Holy, holy, holy,
merciful and mighty!
God ever glorious,
evermore be praised!

The Collect Prayer

God, our refuge and strength,
bring near the day when wars shall cease
and poverty and pain shall end,
that earth may know the peace of heaven
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Mark 12: 38-44 (Jesus extols the virtues of generosity.)

As he taught, Jesus said, ‘Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the market-places, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.’

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few pence. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on.’

Thought for the Day

It’s great to meet up with a friend. I would imagine we’d be looking forward to a nice relaxed time, catching up with one another and just letting the conversation go wherever it will. We would expect an informal time, and we would certainly not expect our friend to say, ‘Before we start, tell me what you expect to get out of this session’. What! This isn’t a meeting with a counsellor, or bank manager or school tutor. This is just us wanting to spend some time with a friend – relaxed, informal, and with no agenda. Now let’s apply this to meeting Jesus. What motivates us to set time aside to go to church, watch a Service online, of simply have a time of prayer? I hope we don’t have to justify these times with clever reasoning and argument. Knowing Jesus as we do, I hope we would all want to spend time with him – informally, relaxed, and with no agenda. And yet, many who don’t know Jesus that well may well question what they might gain from spending time in worship and prayer? “What’s in it for me?” For us who know Jesus, the question is inappropriate, but for the sake of the honest enquirer, I wonder what we would give as an answer.

Maybe on many occasions we do have an agenda in meeting Jesus. Maybe we do have in mind a desired outcome – peace, reassurance, forgiveness, hope, guidance. Well, now that we are going down this road, let me suggest another outcome – something that often happens once we have spent time with Jesus. Empowerment.

Just like the widow in the Gospel passage this week, we might think that we have very little to offer. We look at the outwardly wealthy, and their contributions seem to eclipse our small efforts. But Jesus applauds the poor widow who put two small coins into the temple treasury. It is often the case that as a result of spending time with Jesus we become aware of our true wealth, out of which we can be generous. Our eyes might be opened to our wealth of knowledge, experience and wisdom, our wealth of faith, hope, optimism, encouragement, our wealth of time, friendship and a listening ear. Sometimes we might approach Jesus feeling empty, and yet we end up feeling well-stocked! Our generosity arises out of our appreciation of how wealthy we are, and spending time with Jesus can be quite an eye-opener.

Let us Pray

A prayer for you
God, our Creator, awaken you each morning to behold the glorious colours of the sun and the sky. God, our Life Giver, strengthen you in your inner being with faith, hope and peace and equip you with strength to face the day. God, our Teacher and Guide, lead you in your way that you may both give and receive true love, that you may end each day blessed by the richness of life. Amen.

A Prayer for COP26
In this second week of COP26, let us pray that the heads of state attending will have the vision and courage to agree to significant emissions cuts. May there be greater awareness of the potential of regenerating nature as part of addressing climate change. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

Go in the power of the Spirit to live and work to God’s praise and glory. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
