Coronation Service bible readings

1Kings 1:32-40

Ephesians 3:14-21

(Lectionary readings: 1 Peter 2:2-10 John 14: 1-14)

Solomon is anointed as King

King David said, “Call in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” When they came before the king, he said to them: “Take your lord’s servants with you and have Solomon my son mount my own mule and take him down to Gihon. There have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”

Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, “Amen! May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, so declare it. As the Lord was with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon to make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David!”

So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon mount King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon. 39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet and all the people shouted, “Long live King Solomon!” And all the people went up after him, playing pipes and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound.

Thought for the Day

Well, what a day! Certainly one to remember in every sense of the word. No-other nation can match the Brits when it comes to ceremonial, pageantry and symbolism.
At our special services we will be looking at the ways in which our Coronation service picks up on the pattern King David set - the story recorded in our Old Testament lesson.

When the Queen died we were reminded that the most sacred moment of anointing at her coronation was carried out in private under a canopy. We were left in no-doubt during her life-time of her deep Christian faith and commitment. We may have wondered whether King Charles shared this. However, recent events have shown that he does.
He too chose to be anointed out of the eye of the public behind a specially designed screen. Clearly for him too, this was a very solemn and sacred moment.

The main panel of the screen, which faced the congregation, featured a tree with the names of the Commonwealth’s 56 member states embroidered onto individual leaves, while the two side screens featured embroidered crosses. A dove is in the topmost branches and on either side of the tree is a trumpet-blowing angel representing the time when heaven and earth will finally be brought together. The crosses remind us of the sacrifice of God himself in the person of Jesus who supremely came not to serve but to be served. The dove is both a sign of peace and a symbol of the Holy Spirit, without whose help none of us can fulfil our destiny.

(The King is increasingly mindful of the part Britain and indeed the Royal Family played in the slave trade. He recognises that reparation must be made. BUT let us not forget that the Commonwealth remains a unifying element and in many ways a force for good.)

The screen featured birds and roses – symbols of a rich and healthy environment. A stylised sun gives life to planet Earth. Charles was and is a true champion of the environment long before most of us woke up to the threats posed by human activity in terms of climate change and species loss.
It was carried by six servicemen from regiments of the Household Division– a Trooper from the Life Guards and a Guardsmen from each of the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards.

Yesterday the monarch dedicated himself to sacrificial service. In the participation of the British Legion in our Henley service today we recognise the sacrifice that so many in the armed services make on behalf of freedom for the rest of us.
It is a great privilege for us all to come together in our special services not only to mark the coronation but also to celebrate all that is good and praiseworthy in our Henley and Ullenhall communities – and to pledge ourselves to work together for peace and justice in our seemingly increasingly dangerous and divided world.

Let us Pray

Heavenly Father, ruler of all humankind, tribes and nations, in your mercy grant the fruits of your spirit to King Charles III our newly anointed King that he may rule with dignity, wisdom, discernment, compassion, faithfulness and equanimity over this nation and the commonwealth exuding the love of Christ to all peoples of the world. Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future. We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Rector and believe you will send us a priest best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith.

Amen
The Blessing

God the Father, by whose glory Christ was raised from the dead, strengthen us to walk with him in his risen life; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

Risen Christ, your wounds declare your love for the world and the wonder of your risen life: give us compassion and courage to risk ourselves for those we serve, to the glory of God the Father.

Amen
