Bible Reading

Ephesians 3: 2-12

Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you,3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. 8 Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

Matthew 2: 1-12 2

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]” 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Thought for the Day

Our gospel reading for the first Sunday in Epiphany has all of the ingredients necessary for us to conjure up our own realisation about the mystique and dramatic impact of the baby boy called Jesus who was born in the humblest of circumstances following a series of unlikely events.

The word Epiphany implies a profound discovery arising from a dramatic revelation and the story of the Magi brings the details of their Epiphany experience. Tradition has it that they originated from two differing locations in Asia and possibly a further one in Africa too. Somehow they had come together and experienced a celestial sign in the form of a star which they interpreted a being the sign of the birth of a great King.

Despite many potential difficulties something drew them to go and see this king for themselves such was his perceived significance to the world. So they prepared gifts of great value to present to him and went on a tortuous journey which led them to encounter an angry King Herod who feared displacement by this new King; Herod, a determined man who wished to find this new king himself and thereafter to eliminate him.

Much to their amazement the Magi, who expected to find a new baby King in somewhere such as a palace, were eventually led by the star to a humble stable where the baby Jesus was revealed to them and they duly paid homage and left their gifts returning home by a different route to avoid Herod.

All very well but apart from being a truly remarkable event in history what relevance does this have for us? Well, we too are on a life-long journey of discovery seeking to learn more about our creator. This journey has high spots and low; it has inspiring moments and disappointing ones; there are not only profound discoveries of truths but also mysteries that cannot be resolved straightaway.

So why do we undertake this when we could just accept that there is or was a creator and that is that. Perhaps it is a deep down belief or faith that leads us the possibility of a forging much more meaningful and longer-term relationship with our creator God than we dare to demand or take for granted; an inner desire to form a closer relationship to explore such a possibility; a calling so strong that we are prepared to take risks and step well outside of our comfort zone; a longing to experience love that could come from no other than the one who made us in his own likeness.

The Magi were in awe of this King Jesus before they ever met him and even after the anti-climax of his circumstances they formed a special allegiance to him. They well and truly had their Epiphany! But even though in contrast we know more than them about the impact of Jesus Christ upon the fortunes and future of mankind, we have an ongoing relationship with Jesus in spirit which has the potential to reveal so much more to us if only we would apply ourselves in our daily lives. There is no need for risk in this quest, nor physical or mental discomfort, nor the necessity of any expensive gifts; just faith and an open heart and mind and some Jesus time in our busy lives is enough!

Let us Pray

Lord Jesus we pray that the opportunity to have our own Epiphany experience of you in our own lives will continually draw us closer to you in spirit and in truth. Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future.

We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Priest and believe you will send one best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith.

Amen
The Blessing

May God the Father, who led the wise men by the shining of a star to find the Christ, the Light from light, lead us also in our pilgrimage to find the Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us, always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

Creator of the heavens who led the Magi by a star to worship the Christ-child: guide and sustain us , that we may find our journey’s end in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
