Trinity 21 - 6th November 2022

The First Hymn
Welcome!

There are many clever systems that can establish our precise location – that is, our precise physical location. There are times, however, when we are transported to another place where we have a spiritual experience. It is more than just our mind wandering because what we hear and see takes us by surprise. We end up enriched by the experience, possessing an insight or wisdom which we didn’t have before. The more we worship, the more we have these moments.

Psalm 34: 1-8, 19-22

I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord rescues them from them all. He keeps all their bones; not one of them will be broken. Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

Acclamation

Worthy, O worthy are you Lord,
Worthy to be thanked and praised
and worshipped and adored.
We say ‘Hallelujah’,
Lamb upon the throne,
We worship and adore you;
make your glory known.

The Collect Prayer

Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord,
to your faithful people pardon and peace,
that they may be cleansed from all their sins
and serve you with a quiet mind;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 20: 27-38 (Jesus’ teaching on life beyond death.)

Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. ‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. The second and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children.

Finally, the woman died too. Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?’ Jesus replied, ‘The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord “the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.’

Thought for the Day

When the children were young I used to get them to watch the Reith Lectures when scientists attempted to make mind boggling subjects understandable. Imaginative and fun illustrations were used, and a young studio audience were enthralled. I never admitted to my children that despite the best efforts of the speakers, the subjects still baffled me! I feel a bit the same as I hear Jesus talking about heaven. Jesus picks up on what his cynical audience have thrown at him, and he uses the illustration to explain life in heaven. Jesus speaks straight-forwardly and with authority, but he still leaves me confused. I am left wondering how we will recognise one another, and what will the relationship be between us all, and what will occupy our time.

Having turned the Sadducee’s argument about marriage on its head, Jesus rounds off his argument with a reference to Moses and the Burning Bush. He uses just two sentences to make a huge point. Had I been there, I would have been standing speechless, still confused, and yet strangely reassured.

Sometimes we need to know things ourselves, and sometimes we just need to know somebody who knows. I take comfort in following the one who knows where he is going. Our lives are dominated by scientific principles that are beyond our comprehension. It’s the same with spiritual principles. It’s all about who you trust.

Let us Pray

God of life, we praise you for your abiding presence from generation to generation, blessing your people, strengthening us to lives of service, empowering us to witness. Grant that as we serve you now on earth, so we may one day rejoice with all the saints in your kingdom of light and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In the fading of the summer sun, the shortening of days, cooling breeze, swallows' flight and moonlight rays we see your handiwork, Creator God. In the browning of leaves once green, morning mists, autumn chill, fruit that falls and frost's first kiss, we see your handiwork, Creator God. Heavenly Father, forgive our moments of ingratitude, the spiritual blindness that prevents us from appreciating the wonder that is this world, the endless cycle of nature, of life and death and rebirth. Open our eyes to see, our lips to praise, our hands to share, and may our feet tread lightly on the road. Amen.

God of faithful surprises, throughout the ages you have made known your love and power in unexpected ways and places. May we daily perceive the joy and wonder of your abiding presence and offer our lives in gratitude for our redemption. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

Go in the power of the Spirit to live and work to God’s praise and glory. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
