The First Hymn
 Welcome!

Wherever Jesus went, people were moved by his teaching and his actions. Some were surprised, some were incensed, some were thrilled, and some found their lives utterly transformed.
In worship we look forward to spending time with this same Jesus – to feed on him in our hearts, by faith, with thanksgiving.

Psalm 138

I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul. All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord, for they have heard the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord.

For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me. The Lord will fulfil his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Acclamation

Praise God
from whom
all blessings flow.
Praise Him
all creatures here below.
Praise Him above
ye heavenly hosts.
Praise Father, Son
Holy Ghost.

The Collect Prayer

God of truth,
help us to keep
your law of love
and to walk
in ways of wisdom,
that we may find
true life
in Jesus Christ your Son.
Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Mark 3:20-35 (Jesus’ popularity stirs the Establishment.)

Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, ‘He is out of his mind.’ And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He is possessed by Beelzebub! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.’

So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: ‘How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house. Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.’ He said this because they were saying, ‘He has an impure spirit.’

Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.  A crowd was sitting round him, and they told him, ‘Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.’ ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle round him and said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers!  Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.’

Thought for the Day

What on earth had Jesus been up to! What had he been saying in order to rouse such a strong reaction? We are told that ‘his family went to take charge of him’. Can you imagine that! More ominously, Jesus had provoked the teachers of the law who concluded that he was demon-possessed. And yet so many people crowded into the house where he was that there wasn’t even room for Jesus and his disciples to eat. These crowds hadn’t come to watch a freak show, or to be amused by an entertainer. There was something about Jesus that thrilled some and disturbed others.

Before we look at what Jesus was up to, let’s remember how he dealt with his detractors. According to Mark’s gospel Jesus first addresses the religious authorities, giving a reasoned argument about why he was not an agent of the devil. The spiritual temperature shoots up, however, when Jesus suddenly fires a rocket towards his accusers. They had inferred that Jesus were rotten to the core, that he had an impure spirit. Jesus’ response reminds us of the kind of things he had been claiming that had got him into trouble in the first place. He implies that whoever slanders him is slandering God – and that was unforgiveable. Just at that point Jesus’ mother and brothers arrive. We don’t know if they heard the tail end of Jesus’ outburst, but we do know that they thought he had gone too far.

Having stood up against the Temple authorities, Jesus was not about to buckle under the weight of his family’s authority. Instead he tells his audience that they are his true family. Whoever responds to God in faithfulness and obedience is his brother, sister and mother. What a day!

Now we can address what Jesus had been up to that provoked such reactions. His family knew that Jesus was special (to say the least) and the religious authorities knew that he was gifted, but they had all hoped that he would be ‘their kind of messiah’. But Jesus was not interested in settling historical/national/political or even religious arguments. And if he were to takes sides, he sided with the poor, the humble, and those who genuinely wanted to know the purposes of God and to fulfil them. This is why allsorts were drawn to him – Jews, Gentiles, Samaritans, Romans.

In our reading from Mark 3 it might seem that Jesus had an issue with authority – that he would not be told by anyone. The truth lies elsewhere. Jesus certainly listened. Jesus knew how to be obedient. We find Jesus repeatedly going out of his way for others. Ultimately, he gave his life for us. Jesus knew how to submit, but he would not submit to anyone who wanted to throw their weight around simply because of some title they had. True authority is won, not claimed. There’s a lesson for us all!

Let us Pray

Lord God, through Jesus Christ you have made yourself known to us, and through him you have called us to be your family. We give thanks for this great privilege, and we pray that we may strengthened to express our gratitude through the joyful fulfilment of your purpose for our lives. Amen.

Lord God, friend of those in need, your Son Jesus has untied our burdens and healed our spirits. We lift up the prayers of our hearts for those still burdened, those seeking healing, those in need within the church and the world. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
