The First Hymn
Welcome!
What is the best way to pray? In our church Services we do a lot of praying – sometimes using a carefully worded prayer, and sometimes allowing our inner private thoughts to find their own expression. In whatever way we might pray, it’s important first to focus on who we are addressing. Both in worship and prayer we pause first to acknowledge the reality of God’s presence.

Psalm 146
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord!

Acclamation

The Lord is my beloved,
his love
is more delightful than wine!
His presence
is more pleasing than perfume
whose fragrance fills the air!
Let us hasten into his presence
for our hearts long for him!
Let us rejoice and delight in him;
let us praise his love for ever!

The Collect Prayer

Almighty God,
whose only Son has opened for us
a new and living way into your presence:
give us pure hearts and steadfast wills
to worship you in spirit and in truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

 Mark 7: 24-37 (Jesus breaks taboos to help others.)

Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. ‘First let the children eat all they want,’ he told her, ‘for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.’ ‘Lord,’ she replied, ‘even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.’ Then he told her, ‘For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.’ She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spat and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, ‘Ephphatha!’ (which means ‘Be opened!’). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosed and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. ‘He has done everything well,’ they said. ‘He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.’

Thought for the Day

In this day and age it is relatively easy to become an international superstar and recognized everywhere. Information and images crisscross the globe at the press of a button. In Jesus’ time it was much more difficult to be widely known. In our gospel story today we find Jesus a long way from home, in the Gentile territory of Tyre. It seems that he wanted to get away from the epi-centre of his ministry – to have a breather where he would not be in such demand. It is extraordinary, therefore, that even here Jesus is recognized…by a Greek woman of all people. This fact alone makes us sit up and wonder about Jesus and his ministry for his reputation to be spread so far and wide.

Jesus’ encounter with this Greek woman tells us two things about his reputation. Not only was he famous for his miracles of healing and exorcism, but he also had a reputation for breaking boundaries between people, caring for Jew and Gentile alike. On both accounts here was an extraordinary man.
The conversation between the woman and Jesus needs explaining so that he can fully appreciate its humour, gentleness and compassion. Jesus is well aware that to both Jew and Gentile being called a dog was a term of insult and dishonour. And so Jesus plays with this thought, but he also turns the comment into something that signifies endearment because he uses a word that refers to a pet that would have evoked affection. The women, similarly to another conversation that took place between Jesus and a woman he met one day at a well (John 4), enters into the banter, Despite her great concern and request for help for her daughter, the woman feels welcomed and loved enough to relax and give back as good as she got. Jesus had this wonderful knack of putting people at their ease. When the woman went home she found her daughter well again, but long before finding this out she must have felt good the very moment Jesus engaged with her.

When we pray, we need to know that we are being heard, taken seriously, loved and attended to. This is what happens when we pray to Jesus.

Let us Pray

Creator God, from the moment your spirit hovered over the waters of this earth, we were part of a vision held lovingly within your heart. From the moment you spoke and separated darkness from light, you created space where we might one day walk. From the moment your joy spilled out into green and living things, your beauty was revealed for us to taste and see.

Creator God, for this world, beauty and majesty, passion and artistry, we praise your mighty name. Amen.

You are the God who formed us, the God who knows us, the God who loves us, the God who leads us, the God who strengthens us, the God who blesses us, the beginning and end of all that we are, and hope to be. You are worthy of our praise. Amen.

Holy Lord, maker of us all, you call us to love our neighbours as ourselves and teach us that faith without works is dead. Open us to the opportunities for ministry that lie before us, where faith and words and the need of our neighbour come together in the name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
