Revelation 7: 9-17

Angels singing in heaven

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.’ All the angels were standing round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, saying: ‘Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honour and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!’ “Then one of the elders asked me, ‘These in white robes – who are they, and where did they come from? ’I answered, ‘Sir, you know. ’And he said, ‘These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore, ‘they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. “Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them nor any scorching heat. For the lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd and “he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Matthew 23: 1-12 The folly of pride and self-satisfaction

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 ‘The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practise what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. ‘Everything they do is done for people to see: they make their phylacteries[a] wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honour at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the market-places and to be called “Rabbi” by others. ‘But you are not to be called “Rabbi”, for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth “father”, for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

In Matthew 25 we read that on the day of judgement King Jesus will say “Truly I tell you whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” And there is a corollary to that!

So, for me, ignoring the plight of our brothers and sisters in Christ is not an option. At the very least we should keep ourselves informed – and pray for them.

Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed at all the bad news that is around at the moment and don’t want to hear any more! But it is not all bad news. The stories that will be shared in the service are ones of faith and courage, of light being shone in dark situations, of Christians showing the most amazing love to their enemies. And in this we echo the law of love which featured in our gospel reading last week.

A few weeks back the Henley congregation listened to a Christian song based on our reading from the book of Revelation. They liked it and said “Next time we’d like to sing it ourselves” So here are the words.

"There is a higher throne Than all this world has known Where faithful ones from every tongue Will one day come Before the Son we'll stand Made faultless through the Lamb Believing hearts find promised grace Salvation comes" And there we'll find our home Our life before the throne We'll honour Him in perfect song Where we belong He'll wipe each tear-stained eye As thirst and hunger die The Lamb becomes our Shepherd King We'll reign with Him
Chorus Hear heaven's voices sing Their thunderous anthem rings Through emerald courts and sapphire skies Their praises rise All glory, wisdom, power Strength, thanks, and honour are To God our King, who reigns on high Forevermore

Let us Pray

God of suffering look down those who practice and profess true faith in you in the harshest and most hostile of locations and circumstances. Through your infinite mercy and love and bring them true and lasting relief and grant that we may offer them comfort, support and understanding by whatever means are at our disposal. Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future. We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Priest and believe you will send one best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith. Amen
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us, and all those for whom we love and care, always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

God of peace,

whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom

and restored the broken to wholeness of life:

look with compassion on the anguish of the world,

and by your healing power

make whole both people and nations;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen
