The First Hymn
Welcome!

We often find ourselves having to wait for somebody, or for something to arrive. When we go to church we sometimes describe it as ‘waiting for God’ or ‘waiting on God’. Waiting can seem like an inactive time when we just have to wait, and nothing else. But when what we are waiting for arrives, then the action begins. It’s the same when we wait for God; all seems quiet…until he arrives!

Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13

Lord, you were favourable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You forgave the iniquity of your people; you pardoned all their sin.
Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.
Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.
The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps.

Acclamation

The Lord shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth;
love, joy, and hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth!
Before him on the mountains,
shall peace, the herald, go,
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow!

The Collect Prayer

Father in heaven,
who sent your Son to redeem the world
and will send him again to be our judge:
give us grace so to imitate him
in the humility and purity of his first coming
that, when he comes again,
we may be ready to greet him
with joyful love and firm faith;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 3: 1-6 (John the Baptist prepares the way)

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar – when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene – during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness,

“Prepare the way for the Lord,

   make straight paths for him.

Every valley shall be filled in,

every mountain and hill made low.

The crooked roads shall become straight,

   the rough ways smooth.

And all people will see God’s salvation.”’

Thought for the Day

Have you ever spent some time in a desert? They can be beautiful places. We can be away from all the distractions of life, and yet at the same time the desert experience can make us feel very connected. Being in a desert can be a mystical experience. We may well sense a connection with the wider universe when angels are close by and past generations not far away. And if we wanted to hear God speaking to us, then being in a desert is a good place to be. This is why we often find prophets going off into the desert, to hear and to proclaim the word of God.

This is where we find John the Baptist evoking the words of the prophet Isaiah, ‘‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” As a result, crowds of people went out to John and responded to his call.

Let’s first remember John’s solitude in the desert. He went somewhere where he could be focussed on God – somewhere that made being spiritual easy. This could be our first challenge this Advent – to find an uncluttered place where in solitude we can focus on our inner being – to reconnect with our spirit – to hear more clearly the call of God to prepare his way. Our second challenge will be to not linger too long in our solitude, because it can turn into loneliness. God has not made us to be cut off from others, whether it’s because of our sinfulness or saintliness. Often when we think of John the Baptist’s ministry, we focus on individual acts of repentance. (Please repent of your sins, if that is what you feel called to do!) I would, however, like to invite you to refocus on the bigger picture: A crowd gathered around John the Baptist, and in their baptism they were entering into a new community of faith and hope. The Advent journey takes us from busyness to solitude and back into community. Advent is a time for us to regain that sense of being a people who, together, wait for the Lord. As Isaiah said, “And all people will see God’s salvation.”

Let us Pray

I pray that the God of timeless grace will fill you with joyful expectation as you make your way through Advent. I pray that the Lord will be with you as you prepare the way for his arrival afresh in your heart. As together we eagerly await his arrival, may God inspire and enable us to embrace the challenges of holiness and righteousness – to be that unquenchable light of goodness that will not be defeated by the trials and temptations of this life. May our joy lift the spirits of those around us so that, together, we may truly celebrate the birth of the Son of God on earth. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

Christ the Sun of Righteousness shine upon you and scatter the darkness from before your path; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
