A number of preachers will wake up on Trinity Sunday this morning with the thought …Oh No! Its Trinity Sunday and I must try and make the truth of the 3 in 1 understandable to my congregation once again.
One book on Christian Doctrine states under Trinity “In unity of this Godhead there be three persons of one substance, power, and eternity.” Oh really! That isn’t much help either. One explanation provided is to describe the Trinity this way: - I am a father, a grandfather, and a great grandfather; to all a father figure with a different role but experienced as one and the same, united in the same person.
The Trinity cannot be explained to everyone’s satisfaction but attempts have been made. The Jewish people, as recorded in today’s Isaiah reading, could ask what more do they or we now need, other than a Heavenly father as described in this headline reading.
In our lifetime we have been brought up in a world where Jesus Christ has always been the established head of the Christian Church. We have all hopefully received, believed, and trusted in the Son of God (or God in human flesh) who walked this earth. In Matthew’s gospel and the rest of the New Testament we are taught all there is to know about our Creator God, who lived for three years amongst us on earth for real.
But in addition to this knowledge of Old and New Testament prophecies, records and proofs we have also been influenced and guided in our hearts and minds leading to a living faith that calls upon us to justify and honour the will of The Father as revealed by The Son. This influence comes through the gift of The Holy Spirit that matches exactly the essence of our faith in The father and The Son.
Was it the Holy Spirit stirring within that led us to worship in St. John’s Church and has that stirring influence been around in how our lives have unfolded and in the decisions we have made? If we give close thought to this, we may be very surprised. We would hope that the Holy Spirit is present in our worship each week and if not we might need to ask why not!
So we are created by The Father, taught by The Son and led by The Holy Spirit just as are all Christians. There are no gaps, no variations, no differences - just one faith in one ‘Godhead’ that we call The Trinity.
We are Trinity people and we hear the Great Commission in today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel where Jesus declares His authority and then gives it to His Disciples. That means all of us too, folks and so just like them, ‘in the power of The Holy Spirit’, let’s go and make sure the truth about Him is broadcast near and far. We don’t have to do this alone, but in the strength that He gives us through that same Holy Spirit.
Our prayer is: - We remember, O Lord what you are making in us day by day; and as you have called us to your service, make us worthy of this calling.
Amen
