Exodus 20: 1-12

The Ten Commandments

And God spoke all these words: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

John 2: 13-22

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts

When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

Thought for the Day

It is very rare to find passages in the bible where Jesus is visibly angry especially when it comes to inflicting punishment on others.

However this passage from John’s Gospel portrays him as being very, very angry indeed and the root cause is a flagrant breach of at least one of the ten commandments that are the subject of our passage from the book of Exodus.

The first three commandments begin with a “you shall not command” and all three demand absolute loyalty and faith in one God, that is the one creator God who led the Jews out of slavery in Egypt to safety. Because of all of the detailed laws added by the Pharisees over the years animal sacrifices had become an inordinately significant feature of worship and various businesses had sprung up to facilitate this.

The traders in the Temple Courts had set up their businesses selling animals and changing currency and so in effect were placing the monetary rewards of their trade as ‘a god above their true God to whom their ancestors had sworn everlasting allegiance. Let us then not for a moment think that Jesus in any way varied or softened the Ten Commandments. Indeed, he added emphasis to them with his own command that we should ‘love the Lord our God with all of hearts, our souls and our minds’.

No wonder his anger then to find such things going on especially these people making profit out of worshipping pilgrims. Few of us today can claim total adherence to the Ten Commandments in word, deed and spirit so perhaps during this season of Lent we can at least reflect upon our transgressions and resolve afresh to commit ourselves wholeheartedly for the future whilst appealing in prayer for Jesus’ own forgiveness of our past mistakes.

Amen

Let us Pray

Lord Jesus forgive us the times when we have gone astray and deserved to feel the force of your anger, only to find that by your grace we have been given yet another chance to repent. Give us wisdom and strength to cast aside the powers of darkness and evil that you defeated on our behalf through your suffering and death on the cross. Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future.

We ask that you help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Priest and believe you will send one best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith.

Amen
The Blessing

Christ give us grace to grow in holiness, to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow him; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

Merciful Lord, grant your people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil, and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
