Worshipping at Home
Pentecost

31st May 2020

The Feast of Pentecost is an exciting festival! We recall the time when the Holy Spirit filled the first disciples with faith, courage and ability. That was the starting point of the Gospel spreading across the world and down the centuries. We welcome the Holy Spirit today for the renewal of faith and the transforming of our world!

Psalm 8: 1-5

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honour.

Acclamation

The love of God
has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit
who has been given to us!
Give thanks to the Lord
and call upon his name.
Sing to him, sing praises to him,
Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God almighty!

The Collect Prayer

Holy Spirit, sent by the Father,
ignite in us your holy fire;
strengthen your children
with the gift of faith,
revive your Church
with the breath of love,
and renew the face of the earth,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)
Bible Reading

John 7:37-39
On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Acts 2:1-8 & 14-17
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout
Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
Thought for the Day

Every Thursday evening for the last ten weeks we have stood outside our houses and applauded the essential workers who have put themselves at risk to look after the rest of us. We have watched doctors and nurses in particular being interviewed about their exceptional work. What makes them do it? Here are a few answers:
  • Confidence in their ability to do the job.
  • Knowledge that what they are doing is both right and good.
  • A sense of Vocation where they believe they are called to the work.
  • Teamwork, knowing they are not alone.
  • Encouragement and Appreciation from those they serve.

These five qualities would be very welcome in most workplaces. Some might even say they are essential for a healthy work-life. Now, what has all this got to do with Pentecost?

The first disciples had a real job on their hands. Jesus had commissioned them to renew and transform the world through the spreading of the Gospel. Now there’s a mission! Forgive me if you don’t know the film, but the disciples must have felt like ‘The Dirty Dozen’! (Twelve condemned soldiers are pressed into service as a crack commando team to undertake a daring mission in Nazi-occupied France.) The disciples succeeded in their mission because the Holy Spirit came to them at Pentecost and, well, basically, gave them the five qualities mentioned above.

Need to recharge your spiritual batteries? Want to be more effective as a Christian? Be empowered by the Holy Spirit! Just ask. Actually, let’s ask together. It works better that way.
Lets us Pray
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
