The First Hymn
Welcome!

The 2nd February is called Candlemas and marks the 40th day of Christmas. We have recently been focusing on Jesus the adult, and suddenly we are thrown back into the story of his Nativity. And why not! At his manger we contemplated all that Jesus would achieve, and in every event in his adult life we hear angels singing, and we see shepherds and Wise Men worshipping.

Psalm 84

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. Happy are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. As they go through the valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength; the God of gods will be seen in Zion. O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob! Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; he bestows favour and honour. No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you.

Acclamation

In the tender compassion
of our God
the dawn from on high
has broken upon us,
to shine on those
who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet
into the way of peace.

The Collect Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,
light of the nations and glory of Israel:
make your home among us,
and present us pure and holy
to your heavenly Father,
your God, and our God. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.
(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)
Bible Reading

Luke 2:22-33 (The presentation of Christ in the Temple.)

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons."

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him.
Thought for the Day

Our dog knows the command ‘to bring’. She dutifully picks up the item and brings it to us. She knows she mustn’t let go until we take the item off her. Then, to encourage her to do this again, we give the item back to her! It’s the same with children: They present a toy to you; you take it off the, admire it, but then you must give it back to them. Something along these lines was happening in the Jerusalem Temple when Mary & Joseph ‘presented’ Jesus. The background to the ritual was that every firstborn male was to be dedicated to God. And so the child would be handed over to a priest, but then it would be handed back in exchange for a prescribed gift. In the case of Mary & Joseph, given that they were poor, it was a pair of pigeons or turtledoves. You may not be aware that the same idea lies behind the moment in baptism when a baby is handed over to the minister at the font. Without wanting to labour the point, the same thing is happening in Holy Communion Services where the bread and wine are offered up to God. God then blesses the elements and then they are given to the congregation. And so this is the drama behind all these events: A Life is handed over, it is lifted up to God for his blessing, and then it is returned in order for it to be a blessing to others. What do you think? Where else might we want to enact this drama? How about each morning… with our own lives.

This ritual might seem slightly pointless, given that we always walk away with what we came to give. But I can assure you that if we genuinely enter into the spirit of it, it can have a significant effect on us. My children might not remember this but before each of them left home for university I advised them, ‘Remember who you are’. I guess what our ritual is advising us is something similar, namely ‘Remember whose you are’. Believe me, remembering these two things each morning can seriously affect your life! In remembering these two things we are not necessarily doing something purely spiritual. Remembering who we are and whose we are can be a very enlightening exercise as we think through our list of family, friends and colleagues. The spiritual side kicks in if we are prepared to take things a step further, remembering that ultimately we are a child of God, and that we belong to him. In acknowledging this, we can then offer our lives up to God, and then receive them back kind of glowing with his blessing!

Candlemas marks a turning point in the Church’s calendar. We finally let go of Christmas and head towards Easter. And as we go, we become aware that God walks with us, helping us to find out who we are and whose we are.
Lets us Pray

Blessed are you, Lord our God, king of the universe: To you be glory and praise for ever! For you are our light and our salvation and we your children wait for your loving kindness. In your Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, there has sprung up a light for the righteous and joyful gladness for those who are faithful. As we, like Simeon and Anna, welcome him with joy, presented before us as light of all the world, may we be filled with his spirit and made a living temple to the praise and glory of your holy name. Amen.

The light of God surrounds us, the love of God enfolds us, the power of God protects us, the presence of God watches over us. Wherever we are, God is, and where God is, all is well. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

Christ the Son of God, born of Mary , fill you with his grace to trust his promises and obey his will; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
