Trinity 10 - 28th August 2022

The First Hymn
Welcome!
Some Greeks approached one of Jesus’ disciples with a request, ‘Sir’, they said, ‘we would like to see Jesus’ (John 12:20). That is a perfect way for us to approach a time of worship. Our fellowship, hymns, prayers, readings and thoughts should work together to help us focus on Jesus. He is our salvation and our life. In meeting him in worship we can renew our pact of friendship and loyalty.

Psalm 111

Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. Full of honour and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful. He provides food for those who fear him; he is ever mindful of his covenant. He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

Acclamation

Worthy,
O worthy are you Lord,
Worthy to be thanked and praised
and worshipped and adored.
We say ‘Hallelujah’,
Lamb upon the throne,
We worship and adore you;
make your glory known.

The Collect Prayer

O God, you declare your almighty power
most chiefly in showing mercy and pity:
mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace,
that we, running the way of your commandments,
may receive your gracious promises,
and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 14: 1, 7-14 (The price and the prize of humility.)

One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honour at the table, he told them this parable: ‘When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honour, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, “Give this person your seat.” Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, “Friend, move up to a better place.” Then you will be honoured in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’

Then Jesus said to his host, ‘When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbours; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’

Thought for the Day

Back in May it was my privilege to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. After a while, the National Anthem heralds the arrival of royalty. We are all marshalled into human corridors, to make paths for princes and princesses to wander amongst us and to greet a few. I admit that we all jostled for good vantage positions, and we all envied the few who were chosen to shake hands and talk to royalty. Yes, for a short time many of us started behaving in a juvenile way…’Please sir, yes, me, over here, please sir’, whilst the experienced hands were already in the queue for a cup of tea.
Each year, thousands are invited to royal events whilst tens of thousands are more deserving. It is just not possible to devise a system that can identify and reward all deserving people. But in God’s Kingdom, this is exactly what happens. In God’s eyes, no-one is overlooked. And you and I are God’s scouts. We are called to search for the unsung heroes and to honour them. ‘Lifting up the lowly’ is a very godly thing to do. And those we miss, will be singled out by God in his own good time.

Finally, let’s shift our vision from earthly activity towards heaven. What can we hear when we eavesdrop on heaven? Hymn singing? Is that all? I hear giggling and laughter! I sense fun and merriment! The saints, are busy planning joyful delights and happy surprises for one another. The deep satisfaction that comes from honouring others is irresistible

Let us Pray

Almighty God, in your goodness, you provide for the needy. Remove from your people the pride of place and the pursuit of power that mocks humility. Open our hearts in generosity and justice to the neglected and lonely, that in showing esteem for others, we may honour and please you through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God of majestic glory, in humility you have revealed yourself in the incarnation of your Son, Jesus Christ, who took the lowest place among us that we might be raised to the heights of divinity. Teach us to walk the path he prepared for us, so that we might take a place at the table with all who seek the joy of his kingdom. Amen.

Creator and King of all Creation, Shaper of heaven and earth, help us see your glory in all your creation. Let us see you in our brothers' and sisters' faces. Bless us with the knowledge of your ways. Comfort us with your mercy and grace. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
