Trinity 2 - 26th June 2022

The First Hymn
Welcome!
Wherever Jesus went, people were moved by his teaching and his actions. Some were surprised, some were incensed, some were thrilled, and some found their lives utterly transformed.
In worship we look forward to spending time with this same Jesus – to feed on him in our hearts, by faith, with thanksgiving.

Psalm 138
I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul. All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord, for they have heard the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord.
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me. The Lord will fulfil his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Acclamation

Praise God
from whom
all blessings flow.
Praise Him
all creatures here below.
Praise Him above
ye heavenly hosts.
Praise Father, Son
Holy Ghost.

The Collect Prayer

Lord, you have taught us
that all our doings without love are nothing worth:
send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts
that most excellent gift of love,
the true bond of peace and of all virtues,
without which whoever lives is counted dead before you.
Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 9: 57-62 (The cost of following Jesus.)

As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’ He said to another man, ‘Follow me.’

But he replied, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’ Still another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.’ Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.’

Thought for the Day

The Gospel Reading this week reminds me of the song ‘I will follow you’, recently made popular through the film ‘Sister Act’. The film version lyrics are: “I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go. There isn't an ocean too deep or mountain so high it can keep, keep me away. I must follow him. Ever since he touched my hand I knew that near him I always must be, and nothing can keep him from me, He is my destiny.” Many modern worship songs follow similar themes.

Sometimes they are inspiring, and sometimes they are too gooey. Critics might say that the serious business of following Jesus is reduced to the level of a teenage crush. But Jesus’ call to us to follow him is serious and demanding, and we have to consider what might motivate us to make such a deep commitment. It is commendable if our decision to follow Jesus is purely based on the power of his manifesto.

The call to put God first, to love our neighbour as ourselves, to be firmly and actively opposed to all forms of abuse of power, and to pursue the path of love, forgiveness, understanding and compassion is truly inspiring, but is it enough? Has any movement ever been able to create truly dedicated followers just on the power of the message without some connection, admiration and loyalty to the founder of the movement? Now there’s something to debate! If we were to look at the way the first apostles committed themselves to Jesus, we would see that there is always that moment when a face to face encounter with Jesus clinches the commitment. Remember Thomas meeting the risen Lord. Remember Peter being forgiven.

Remember Mary Magdalene meeting Jesus outside the empty tomb. Remember Paul on the way to Damascus. Similarly, we are invited to meet Jesus – to have that spiritual moment when we sense we are in his presence. And yes, the encounter does not just engage our rational faculties, but it also stirs our emotions. We look for that moment when we not only embrace Jesus’ message but also, as the song says, we are awakened to say ‘He is my destiny’.

Let us Pray

Creator God, in your hand are the depths of the earth. The mountain peaks belong to you, The sea is your creation, the dry land is your handiwork, the fruit of the land is your design, the taste of the produce is your gift, and we are your people, a flock under your care. We give you our thanks and praise, O God. Amen.

Lord, we pray that the fruit of the Spirit may grow in us. However we are treated by other people, we pray that your love may shine forth in us. Whatever happens in our lives, we ask that your peace and joy would abide within us. No matter what difficulties we may encounter in life, teach us to be patient and kind in all our dealings with others and manifest the goodness and grace in us that only comes from you. However hard times may become, we pray that we may be gentle and self-controlled in our actions and attitudes. May we be good and faithful servants. Lord, we thank you that no matter what happens, even when we stumble, you remain faithful. Therefore, both in times of sunshine and rain, we pray that the fruit of the Spirit may grow in us to your glory. Amen.

Lord God, as you moved in the lives of ancient prophets, move in our lives, inviting us to journey to unknown territory, to listen for your voice, and to speak your prophetic word in a world that does not want to hear. Empowered by your Spirit, grant us the courage we need to journey, trust, listen, speak, and accept your commission to be your faithful servant people. Amen

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
