Bible Reading

Genesis 17: 1-7, 15-16

The Covenant with Abram

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty[a]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram[b]; your name will be Abraham,[c] for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

Mark 8: 31-38

Jesus predicts his death

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

Thought for the Day

You won’t need reminding that we are in an election year in the UK and the US. Lots of talk about promises.

This means the UK prime minster, Rishi Sunak, made five promises last year against which he is being assessed. The Labour Party have changed their policy to invest £28 billion in ‘green technology’ if they reach power – their answer to criticism being that they don’t want to make a promise now that they can’t keep if they come into power.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump are both making promises about what will happen if they are re-elected as president of the USA this autumn – and also what disaster will likely happen if their opponent gets elected!

Lots of people are very cynical about promises made by politicians. Mary Poppins talks about ‘pie-crust promises’ which are, ‘easily made and easily broken’ as she refuses to promise Michael that she’ll never leave.

Whose promises do you trust?

When interviewed the day after last week’s bi-elections Rishi Sunak said “I’m focusing on my priorities”

That’s also what Jesus says in our gospel. Judging by Peter’s reaction Jesus’ priorities were not sure-fire vote winners but what he said assuredly came true.

Amen

Let us Pray

Lord Jesus we know that you teach us the true way of life. Grant that we may follow your ways into our hope of eternal life through your sufferings, death and resurrection. Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future.

We ask that you help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Priest and believe you will send one best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith. Amen
The Blessing

Christ give us grace to grow in holiness, to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow him; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

Almighty God, by the prayer and discipline of Lent may we enter into the mystery of Christ’s sufferings and by following in his way come to share His glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
