Bible Reading

This week’s bible readings

Zephaniah 3 vs.14-20

Luke’s Gospel Ch.24 vs. 13-35

Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognising him.

He asked them, ‘What are you discussing together as you walk along?’ They stood still, their faces downcast.  One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, ‘Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? ’What things?’ he asked.

‘About Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.  The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.  Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.’

He said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!  Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’  And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going further.  But they urged him strongly, ‘Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them.

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.  Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him, and he disappeared from their sight.  They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, ‘It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.’  Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognised by them when he broke the bread.

Thought for the Day

Almost unbelievably two weeks have passed since our Easter service when we proclaimed Christs resurrection with great joy. However our reading today is right back on the same day and recalls the discovery of the empty tomb and the disciples continuing distress and disappointment at Jesus death on the cross. So even though they had heard the news of Mary’s and the other women’s discovery of an empty tomb with Angels in the place of Jesus, they had not been able to comprehend all this meant and whether they dare believe what they had been told.

Then two of the disciples, Cleopas and another, who were walking to the village of Emmaus, were lost in the depths of despair as they discussed all that had happened. Then they encounter a stranger who asks penetrating questions and they open their hearts to him. Much to their surprise the stranger seems to know more about their great prophets and Jesus The Messiah than they do and he gives them quite a lecture on the various prophecies in the old scriptures. He even calls them foolish and slow to believe when they have all the evidence that they need to understand what has happened and what will happen next.

Later on the stranger agrees to stay and eat with them but to their amazement and surprise when he breaks bread and takes wine with them they recognize it is Jesus himself, fully risen and alive in person; but as they are about to exclaim their recognition he disappears from their sight.

I wonder how much attention we have paid to the Old Testament prophecies ourselves, indeed the Old Testament itself? The bible is a complete account of the development of Christianity and culminates with a climax of disastrous news on the cross only to be eclipsed by the resurrection and deity of Jesus Christ, all of which is foretold in the prophecies and the ancient scriptures.

Maybe some of the stories telling of violence and corruption put us off but they are all part of the history of man’s relationship with God. They also reflect the history of man’s understanding and sometimes misunderstanding of God’s will and his ways but then Jesus’ teaching in the New Testament opens our eyes to these and the true revelation of God himself becomes apparent.

It sounds like an awesome task but maybe we should try reading the bible once to get the full picture and then a second time to fully understand the Old in the light of the New and the New in the light of the Old. If we can’t face that then at least we can listen to the Old Testament readings on Sundays!

Amen

Let us Pray

Lord Jesus we encounter your Spirit so many times in our lives as situations and people demand our attention but how many times do we recognize you as being there calling us to action or leading us to mission. We are often taken over by events and influenced by so called ‘modern values’ and ‘ways of life’ when we should fall back on your guidance and example. Strengthen our belief in you dear Lord and give us courage and faith to follow you and discern your will especially when we are discouraged or confused.
Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).
Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future. We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Rector and believe you will send us a priest best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith.
Amen
The Blessing

God the Father, by whose glory Christ was raised from the dead, strengthen you to walk with him in his risen life; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

Risen Christ you filled your disciples with boldness and fresh hope: strengthen us to proclaim your risen life and fill us with your peace, to the glory of God the Father.

Amen
