1 Thessalonians: 1-10

Paul, Silas[a] and Timothy -To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace and peace to you. Thanksgiving for the Thessalonians’ Faith.

2 We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. 3 We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labour prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.4 For we know, brothers and sisters[b] loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. 6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 7 And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8 The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, 9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

Matthew 22: 15-22 Recognising what belongs to God

Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[a] to Caesar or not?”

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

Thought for the Day

It’s been the political party season. What a spectacle! Perhaps you may also have been watching Laura Kueunssberg’s documentary “State of Chaos”. Pollsters tell us many people are so disillusioned with politics that they are not inclined to vote.

We may have some sympathy with this point of view “They are all as bad as each other” people say. However, we have also to remember the price paid by those who fought for universal suffrage in this country - and the vast numbers of people across the world who have no say in who governs their country and their lives.

Christians often hold differing opinions about whether it is right to engage in political debate. Archbishop Justin has both been praised and heavily criticised for speaking out on what he regards as serious moral and social issues.

Have you noticed how politicians in recent years have stopped even attempting to answer the tricky questions journalists pose. Instead, they just talk over the top of them and keep reiterating the point THEY wish to make – whatever the question!

Jesus didn’t duck either the political or theological issue behind the question his opponents raised in today’s gospel. Roman coins added insult to injury. Not only was there the requirement for the Jews to pay tax to the Roman authorities in this coinage but the coins bore a human image, offensive in itself (for the commandments specifically forbade the Jews from making any graven image). To add insult to injury the inscription around the edge declared Caesar to be the son of God - in other words divine.

Writing to the Colossians Paul describes Jesus as the (mirror) image of the invisible God. By this time in his life Jesus was set on a path that would show the true and unique Son of God unleashing not political or fiscal power but demonstrating in his own broken body the ultimate in self-giving love.

As for the Thessalonians (to whom our epistle was written) they had turned from idols to serve the living God and became a model to all the believers of lives lived in imitating Christ.

What a reputation!

Let us Pray

God of forgiveness hear our cry and lead us to repentance so that we may enter your Kingdom and join in your feast of celebration. Amen.

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future. We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Priest and believe you will send one best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith.

Amen
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us and all those whom we love and care for, always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

God, our light and our salvation: illuminate our lives, that we may see your goodness in the land of the living, and looking on your beauty may be changed into the likeness of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
