The First Hymn
Welcome!

In Church life we are either recovering from a festival or looking forward to the next one! The cycle of festivals begins with Advent Sunday (next week), we then go through the year charting Jesus’ life, and then we always end on a triumphant note with the Feast of Christ the King. But it’s worth remembering that the Church’s year also helps us to see why our own lives are worth celebrating as well!

Psalm 95: 1-7

O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

Acclamation

Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty!
All thy works
shall praise thy Name,
in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty,
God in three Persons,
blessèd Trinity.

The Collect Prayer

Eternal Father,
whose Son Jesus Christ
ascended to the throne of heaven
that he might rule over all things
as Lord and King:
keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit
and in the bond of peace,
and bring the whole created order
to worship at his feet;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

John 18: 33-37 (The King stands before the Governor.)

Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ ‘Is that your own idea,’ Jesus asked, ‘or did others talk to you about me?’ ‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?’ Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.’ ‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate.

Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’

Thought for the Day

There are so many years each year! The calendar year, the school year, the financial year. And then there is the liturgical year through which we enjoy all the major festivals. This ‘church year’ begins late November/early December with Advent Sunday and ends with ‘Christ the King’. Each year we remember Jesus’ ministry, teachings and trials. We remember Jesus’ birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension. But as we go through these events, we always bear in mind that at the end of the year we end on a triumphant note as we celebrate ‘Christ the King’. This cycle of the year can be a very helpful template for our own lives. From birthday to birthday we can remember our own childhood, youth and adult life; we can recall landmark moments and important people; we can trace our development as a person and note the path that has brought us to where we are. In order to prove to ourselves that we are still alive (!) we can make annual resolutions, take on challenges, make a point of growing in faith, and also faithfulness to those who share our life with us. Of course, as well as the things we plan, each year has its fair share of unexpected joys and sorrows. Sometimes matters can overwhelm us to the point that we want to hide away.

Maybe the last thing we want is to push ourselves because we feel pushed about enough. Such feelings are understandable, but when they come it might help to know that we don’t travel through each year alone. Life has been designed by God to be a shared journey. By the grace of God each one of us will find the right balance between being dependent and dependable. And then, with Christ beside us, may we also end each cycle of our lives on a triumphant note! May we never lose sight of the reasons why our life is worth celebrating.

Let us Pray

A prayer for you:

I pray that the most High God, majestic and almighty, our beginning and our end, may rule in our hearts and guide us to be faithful in our daily actions. May we worship the one who comes as Saviour and Sovereign, both in our words and actions, and in serving the Lord may we find our joy and contentment. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may by you be plenteously rewarded; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.
