John 1:6-8 and 19 - 28

John the Baptist’s Message

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders] in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’” Now the Pharisees who had been sent, questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” “I baptize with[e] water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The day of the lord – final instructions

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Chris. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. Brothers and sisters, pray for us. Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss. I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Thought for the Day

Where is the baby Jesus?

You may be aware that the baby Jesus had been stolen from the annual nativity scene outside the Baptist Church! That should no longer shock or dismay us, or should it, that Jesus is no longer where he should be at Christmas?

The fact is that by 2023 we have almost learned to do Christmas without Jesus. Christmas was mentioned in advertising in all the programmes on Channel 5 one day recently, but the word was not related to anything to do with the birth of Jesus.

We are told that one stately home will not survive in 2024 unless a great profit is made from the decorations and goodies to be seen and sold to their visitors because it is Christmas.

Another programme is billed as” Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas” (available on Channel 4 catch up if you want to watch it!) if you think this will give you the ultimate Christmas joy, but again completely unrelated to the birth of the Saviour of the world.

In seven days’ time it will be Christmas eve and at midnight communion maybe we will sing with great gusto “Joy to the world the Lord has come. Let Earth receive her King.” But such a declaration of our faith will be challenged by an increasing percentage of the population of the “world He so loved,” and was born into save, managing to ignore the Baby who gave us Christmas.

Sadly, we all live in uncertain times and bread will be broken at the altar in a broken world. There can be no joy in Gaza, or wherever the latest flood, tempest or devastation of life is in the world, and in the present circumstances as they endure such trauma, it, would be hard for them to celebrate receiving its King.

Against all this backdrop of darkness, there has never been a better time when the Christian message of love needs to be heard. A significant part of our celebrations that can take place will surely be great thankfulness for our freedom and the ability to go on celebrating and, hopefully, enjoying life in Henley in Arden. As Christians we must do all we can to enable our neighbour to welcome the new-born King.

It is at Christmas time, when the Spirit of Christmas, even without the baby, is in millions of hearts and we want everyone to be happy. When the deprived, the homeless, the deserted, the disabled, the hungry and the lonely are cared for. And where non - Christians, lapsed Christians and many who have not heard the Christian story will be joining in some form of celebration and we pray that they will hear the message of Jesus Christ born in a stable, the Prince of Peace come to live amongst us. So that they too may experience the joy of Christmas.

How about pledging ourselves to extend the Christmas Spirit into every day of the New Year and letting our lights shine in the darkness every day, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Let us Pray

Lord Jesus we pray that through your Holy Spirit we shall hold the true meaning of Christmas in our hearts and minds and be unafraid to tell all around us of the wonders of your birth, life and ministry. Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future.

We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Priest and believe you will send one best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith. Amen
The Blessing

Christ the Sun of Righteousness shine upon us and scatter the darkness before our path, and make us ready to meet him when he comes in glory; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us, always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

God for whom we watch and wait, you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way of your Son: give us courage to speak the truth, to hunger for justice, and to suffer for the cause of right, with Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
