Isaiah55: 10-13

Matthew 13: 1-9, 18-23

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Thought for the Day

How often have we used a figure of speech like ‘his words of advice fell on deaf ears so no one paid attention to the important message; his calls to action fell on stony ground and as a result nothing happened; the initial red hot impact of the message soon turned lukewarm due to the listeners shallow approach to life. In contrast we might be told that someone who had a fertile mind or imagination soon assimilated and understood the detail in depth and acted accordingly without hesitation.

A spectrum of differing reactions amongst a mixed group of people according to their willingness, ability or enthusiasm to accept strong advice or a call to change their way of life and acceptance of new values. To a large extend my collection of modern-day idioms or expressions about these different reactions is an attempt at clarifying or explaining the parable of the sower.

Jesus developed a way of broadcasting his messages so that people of level of intellect and ability could understand what he was saying provided their hearts and minds were open to his teaching, they paid attention and were prepared to act upon what he said. Without full commitment, understanding and resultant action his words would be valueless to that person and valueless also in building up the Kingdom of God.

The simplicity of his stories and the way of life examples as things were then should have made it possible for anyone from a shepherd or farm labourer right up to a tribal leader or priest to pick up the underlying message.

However this parable on its own was an explanation of how and why God’s Kingdom here on earth might be built up right from the earliest beginnings. So the seed that the farmer was sowing was the ‘word of God’. This seed was plentiful in supply and would be scattered here there and everywhere.

As Jesus illustrated sometimes the seed would fall in places where there was no chance of germination; other times a smattering would take root and grow too quickly without developing a strong root base and then die of for lack water. Sometimes the seed would be choked by surrounding weeds competing for root space, water and light to develop. On the other hand some of the seed would flourish in a good and sustainable growth environment and would produce amazing crops.

The real message though behind this parable is that Jesus is talking about the establishment of the Kingdom of God here on earth and the inevitability of how that would come about. There would be no shortage of the seed – in other words the word of God could be found everywhere even in the most hostile and unsuitable environments right through to the most favourable. In this way the seeds would always be germinating and producing fruit or crops throughout the world and there would be no stopping the building and development of this kingdom.

This is quite a thought in today’s world where Christianity is becoming ‘out of fashion’ in some of the more mature Christian communities and countries and yet is still expanding strongly in some African and other less well developed communities. My own ‘thought for today’ – could it be that our brothers and siters from African/Asian and other far-flung nations will be visiting our shores to bring us news of a new vibrant Kingdom of God at some time in years to come? For instance did you know that over the past 20 years Africa has had 37,825 new Christian followers average per day, Latin America 16,988 and Asia 13,443? Could it be something to do with the soil!

 Amen

Let us Pray

Dear Lord Jesus we pray for the revival of Christianity throughout out the developed nations of the world and that we may recapture our spirit of willingness, enthusiasm and attention to absorb your word and convert it into new disciples

Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future. We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Rector and believe you will send us a priest best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith.

Amen
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always.
