The First Hymn
Welcome!

The natural world around us is often called Mother Earth. It is a homely phrase that makes us feel included, valued and loved. In the same way we often talk of Mother Church, and that title implies an embrace that again helps us feel included, valued and loved. Welcome to you on this Mothering Sunday when we celebrate mums and motherhood on many levels.

Psalm 8

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Acclamation

Now thank we all our God,
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things hath done,
in whom his world rejoices;
who from our mother’s arms.
hath blessed us on our way.
 with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.

The Collect Prayer

God of compassion,
whose son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary,
shared the life of a home in Nazareth,
and on the cross
drew the whole human family to himself:
strengthen us in our daily living
that in joy and in sorrow we may know
the power of your presence
to bind together and to heal;
through Jesus Christ your son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unit of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.

 Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)
Bible Reading

Matthew 20:20-28 (A mother pleads for her sons.)

Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favour of him. ‘What is it you want?’ he asked. She said, ‘Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.’ ‘You don’t know what you are asking,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?’ ‘We can,’ they answered. Jesus said to them, ‘You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.’

When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’
Thought for the Day

I would love to eavesdrop on conversations that take place on the afternoon of Mothering Sunday. Once the flowers have been given and the family lunch has been enjoyed, there comes a time when some bright spark will raise the question of the validity of Mothering Sunday in this day and age. These days roles within the household are shared more equally by both parents. No longer is it the case that mothers are the unsung stay-at-home nest providers whilst the fathers are out at work. Also, and thankfully, both parents can be as gentle, caring, understanding and forgiving as each other. The caricaturisation of male and female is a dangerous game. To say that a father rewards a child with a firm handshake and a pat on the back whereas a mother gives them a hug and a kiss would attract a lot of criticism. And yet Fathers’ Day will never match Mothers’ Day. And many a believer will be drawn to the open arms of Mary.

Our Bible story this week plays into the hands of those who still see mums and dads acting very differently. Here we see a mum doing what dad would never do. The mother of Zebedee’s sons kneels in front of Jesus to ask him a favour on behalf of James and John. We can almost hear Zebedee in the background saying, ‘For goodness sake, woman, get up and leave Jesus alone. Let our sons prove themselves and fairly earn any future promotion.’ Mothers!

When I was young, I remember both our mother and our father being very proud of me and my two sisters. But it was my mother who instilled in me the thought that I was special. It took me decades to shake off that view…but also to understand why she believed it. I now realise that I am special, not necessarily to you but to my mother. And I am special to my father. In the same way that a ‘special offer’ in a shop will attract one customer but leave another unimpressed, being special is not a universal quality. Something or someone is special only because the beholder has seen something that others might not have done.

The mother of the sons of Zebedee believed her sons were special. It’s a lovely thought that you and I, though not necessarily God’s gift to mankind, are special to somebody somewhere. Today, let’s thank God from such people. Let us also grasp the opportunity to make other people feel that they are special. And let us turn to God and see in him the typical parental belief that you and I are special in his eyes.
Lets us Pray

Heavenly Father, thank you for all experiences and memories of happy family life. Thank you for mums and for all who have loved us and continue to do so. Out of the richness that we have received help us to be generous towards others, to be loving as we have been loved. Amen.

Heavenly Father, thank you for our Church Family and for the encouragement and support we receive from one another. Help us to be patient as we look forward to being together again. Amen.

Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy. Sustain and support the anxious, be with those who care for the sick, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may find comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

May the love of the Father enfold you, the wisdom of the Son enlighten you,   the fire of the Spirit kindle you; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
