The First Hymn
Welcome!

When we set time aside for prayer and worship we most probably have a good idea what to expect. This is understandable. It’s the same when we go to visit a friend. But sometimes our friends can surprise us, in a good way! Our encounters with God can also sometimes hold a welcome surprise. The key, as in any meeting, is to go ready to listen as well as to speak – to see as well as be seen.

Psalm 50: 1-6

The mighty one, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
Our God comes and does not keep silence, before him is a devouring fire, and a mighty tempest all around him.
He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
"Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!"
The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge.

Acclamation

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
to His feet thy tribute bring;
ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
who like thee His praise should sing?

Praise Him! Praise Him!

Praise Him! Praise Him!

Praise the everlasting King.

The Collect Prayer

Almighty Father,
whose Son was revealed in majesty
before he suffered death
upon the cross:
give us grace to perceive his glory,
that we may be strengthened
to suffer with him
and be changed into his likeness,
from glory to glory;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.
(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)
Bible Reading

Mark 9:2-9 (The Transfiguration.)

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!" Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, but only Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
Thought for the Day

Many years ago I had a Mountain Top experience – literally. I stood on a mountain peak 14,000 feet high. The view was breath-taking. And that it what we mean when we talk about having a Mountain Top experience – something that takes our breath away leaving us dazzled and privileged. Our Bible Reading this week is the original Mountain Top experience. The disciples, Peter, James and John, accompany Jesus up a mountain where his appearance is transfigured. An additional detail is that they saw Jesus talking to Moses and Elijah. What is more, a cloud descended on them and they heard the voice of God speaking very supportively of Jesus. Now that’s an experience!

I want to quickly explain the relevance of all these details before we make it all more personal. First of all, Moses and Elijah were the giants of the Faith, representing the whole religious experience. Their presence tells me that something quite momentous was about to happen in the historic course of religion. Secondly, the supportive message from God the Father was similar to what was heard at Jesus’ baptism. In other words, what was being discussed with Moses and Elijah was in line with the original plan. Nothing that Jesus was about to do and experience was ‘Plan B’. With these thoughts in mind we head into Lent and the Cross. Well, that’s a quick review of the details, but let’s stand back and make it more personal.

There were twelve disciples in Jesus’ inner circle. Imagine the reaction of the other nine to Peter, James and John’s story. Envy? And what about ourselves? Do we ever wish that we had a profound spiritual experience to boost our faith? History is littered with people claiming mystical encounters with God, and the scenes of the incidents become places of pilgrimage. And the pilgrims hope to catch a little bit of the afterglow. The reality is that these famous miraculous encounters inspire faith in some and scepticism in others. Maybe even one of two the disciples questioned the account of the Transfiguration. Judas? Thomas? But the thought of having a Mountain Top experience is still tantalizing, so here is the best advice I have ever received: ‘If you want to encounter God at the top of the mountain, then you have to walk with God step by step up the mountain.’ It’s all about putting the hard work in of getting to know Jesus, learning from him, putting his teaching into practice, giving our relationship with him both time and space, praying, meditating, studying, worshipping, following, doing his work…and then one day we might stop, look up, see the world around us and exclaim, ‘Wow, what a view’!
Lets us Pray

Holy God, mighty and immortal, you are beyond our knowing, yet we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ, whose compassion illumines the world. Transform us into the likeness of the love of Christ, who renewed our humanity so that we may share in his divinity, the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who live and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Creator and King of all Creation, let us see your glory in all your creation. Let us see you in our brothers' and sisters' faces. Let us feel you in the breeze and taste you in the rain. Shaper of heaven and earth, let us see you in the silver face of the moon, and in the patches of sunlight that filter through the trees. Creator and King, Friend and Master, help us to know you in those we meet and in the places where we meet. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

Go in the power of the Spirit to live and work to God’s praise and glory. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
