Trinity 9 - 14th August 2022

The First Hymn
Welcome!
Have you ever encountered God? We often wish that we had been there when Jesus walked this earth. How amazing it must have been to meet Jesus face to face. Before we get too wistful about this, let’s remember that in times of worship, meditation and prayer – or even in a dream – many people have claimed to have experienced being in the presence of God. A hymn puts it this way: Come down, O Love Divine, seek thou this soul of mine.

Psalm 51: 6-12

You [Lord] desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Acclamation

Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
three persons and yet one God.
Perfectly one
from before time began;
one in being and one in glory;
Dwelling in love,
three persons, one God.

The Collect Prayer

Almighty God,
who sent your Holy Spirit
to be the life and light of your church:
open our hearts to the riches of your grace,
that we may bring forth
the fruit of the Spirit in love and joy and peace;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 12: 49-59 (The price and prize of reconciliation.)

‘I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’

He said to the crowd: ‘When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, “It’s going to rain,” and it does. And when the south wind blows, you say, “It’s going to be hot,” and it is. Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?

‘Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.’

Thought for the Day

When I was in Theological College, learning the art of preaching, I heard this cautionary tale: A young preacher stood at the church door, having just delivered a fiery and passionate sermon. He was keen to get the congregation’s reaction. He was, however, taken aback when a stalwart of the church came and shook his hand and said, ‘Thank you. Very comforting.’ So many years later I recall how, after preaching my heart out, I would regularly get the response, ‘Thank you. Very though provoking.’ Jesus’ message was not always comforting. He would disturb people, shaking them out of their spiritual blindness.

Jesus’ message was not designed just to be thought provoking, but action inspiring. It is no wonder that Jesus erupts in frustration, pointing out that his mission was divisive because it was thought provoking, action inspiring, and life changing. When a new invention comes to market, they sometimes refer to it as ‘disruptive technology’. It might be a brilliant development, but it is often slow to be adopted because the industry giants realise how much they have to change their manufacturing practices to accommodate the new product. So it is with Jesus’ message.

But Jesus goes on to add a sense of urgency to his message, saying that the time to embrace this disruptive change is ‘now’. It’s a bit like the Climate Change argument, except that Jesus’ call is all-embracing. So let’s check what we think we have heard Jesus say, and check out our response.

Let us Pray

Judge eternal, you love justice and hate oppression; you give peace to those who seek it, and you condemn the rage of violence. Give us courage to take our stand with all victims of bloodshed and greed, and, following your servants and prophets, look to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Amen.

Almighty God, all thoughts of truth and peace proceed from you. Kindle in the hearts of all people the true love of peace. Guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth; that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Set free, O Lord, the souls of your servants from all restlessness and anxiety.
Give us your peace and power, and so keep us that, in all perplexity and distress,
we may abide in you, upheld by your strength and stayed on the rock of your faithfulness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
