Lent 2 - 13th March 2022

The First Hymn
Welcome!

Every Sunday is a feast day, a time to lay our burdens down and to enjoy the joys of faith – a time for spiritual rest and recuperation. Sundays are also days for building up our strength and commitment so that we can bear the burdens of six days a week where we shoulder the weight of responsibility towards a world in need of God’s blessing. The two go together – being blessed and being a blessing.

Psalm 22: 23-31

You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him; stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
For he did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; he did not hide his face from me, but heard when I cried to him.
From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear him.
The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord. May your hearts live forever!
All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him.
For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.
To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and I shall live for him.
Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord,
and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it.

Acclamation

Great is the Lord
and greatly to be praised,
One generation
shall praise your works to another
and shall declare your power.
All your works praise you, Lord,
and your faithful servants bless you.
They make known the glory
of your kingdom
and speak of your power.
My mouth shall speak
the praise of the Lord.

The Collect Prayer

Almighty God,
by the prayer and discipline of Lent
may we enter into the mystery
of Christ’s sufferings,
and by following in his Way
come to share in his glory;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 13: 31-35 (Jesus laments over Jerusalem.)

At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, ‘Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.’ He replied, ‘Go and tell that fox, “I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.” In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day – for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”’

Thought for the Day

Ask a young person which is the most important city in the world, they might suggest Washington, New York, Beijing, London, or Berlin. Within the grand context of all history we have to say that Jerusalem has been the most significant. What other city might be a contender? We might suggest Rome because of the scope and influence of the Roman Empire, but it is reasonable to say that Jerusalem still outshines its rivals.

This is strange because there has never been a Judean Empire. Judaea never had a reputation as a centre of learning. No invention, no theory, no great discovery is associated with this city, and yet Jerusalem still holds its prime position amongst the most famous of places. This claim is based purely on religion. Today it is sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, but on the day Jesus lamented over it, it was its past that he had in mind. Jerusalem’s history goes back around 5,500 years, but it was around 3,000 years ago that King David conquered it and made it his capital city. Jerusalem was not a large city, and its grandeur owes more to epic films than reality. Almost from the start its history has been turbulent with good and bad kings presiding over a sometimes faithful and sometimes unfaithful population. And yet according to the Bible it was the chosen focus of God’s involvement with the planet.

This choice speaks volumes about the nature of God’s love – it is unmerited, undeserving, astonishing and yet genuine and true. And Jesus weeps over Jerusalem as he heads towards it on his final journey – tears of frustration and love. Our short Bible passage also speaks of Jesus’ determination not to be distracted by hurt and danger that awaited him. Twice we have the peculiar reference to Jesus carrying on ‘today, tomorrow and the next day’. This is simply an expression of his unstoppable determination to fulfil his mission to champion the supremacy of self-giving servanthood as the only true way of living. As a hymn says, ‘Love is his word, love is his way, feasting with men, fasting alone, living and dying, rising again, love, only love, is his way. Richer than gold is the love of my Lord: better than splendour and wealth.

Let us Pray

Hope beyond all human hope, you promised descendants as numerous as the stars to old Abraham and barren Sarah. You promise light and salvation in the midst of darkness and despair, and promise redemption to a world that will not listen. Gather us to yourself in tenderness, open our ears to listen to your word, and teach us to live faithfully as people confident of the fulfilment of your promises. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Lord, in our journeying with you, may we never lose my sense of direction, never lose sight of the landmark towards which we travel. And should cloud or rain obscure our vision, may we draw closer to you, so that our feet may tread in your footsteps, your words be our encouragement, and your love our protection against the storms that assail us. Amen.

God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

Christ give you grace to grow in holiness, to deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow him; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
