1 Kings 19:9-18

 Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus walks on water

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

1 Kings 19:9-18 - God speaks to Elijah in a gentle whisper

And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.

And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.

16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. 18 Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

Thought for the Day

Just imagine trying to explain today’s gospel reading to a new believer. Just who is this amazing character Jesus who has been doing miraculous things. Not only has he healed so many, many people but he has fed 5000 men and probably even more women and children using only five loaves and 2 fishes; and then the next day he has been seen walking on the Sea of Galilee nonetheless! But it is not just this individual miracle that takes the disciples breath away but Jesus command over the wind and waves that immediately stilled as he boarded the disciples’ boat. Ironically the more he does the less his closest followers seem to understand him and the more the ruling authorities persecute him.

How can he perform such miracles and what is his purpose in doing this. Is it mainly to impress his followers or is there more to this man than meets the eye? It is a strange story but is recorded in three separate gospels in the bible. Each one has similar miracles, places and characters in it with minor variations in detail. One of the most interesting aspects of both the stories is God’s absolute power over all beings and all of the forces of nature in his creation. If we look back at our Old Testament reading from 1 Kings about Elijah the prophet, we see God at work again here and once again the forces of nature, such as violent storms, earthquake and fire, play an important part too but are stirred up and then immediately stilled by God just as he chooses his time to speak to Elijah.
In both passages we hear about the laws and power of nature created by God which can be harnessed by mankind for their benefit but which can only be mastered by the power of God. I am sure that most of us have experienced the force of nature first hand at some point in our lives and we have certainly seen it on film and television. It is an integral part of the miraculous creation of the universe and our planet earth. Whilst it is such an important part of our lives it can be very beneficial but has to be respected as it can also be very destructive.

What really makes the difference though is the eternal presence of God who is there to reassure and protect us. Just as our senses are heightened by fear and amazement at what is going on around us so is our sense of relief, comfort and reassurance as the storm passes. God is all things; God is to be found in all situations; God leads us, protects us, guides through the storms of life but we have to listen carefully if we wish to find this peace and security.

Both the disciples of Jesus and Elijah the prophet found relief from the storms that beset them in their time just when they thought that it was all getting too much for them. “Truly you are the son of God” said the disciples as the storm died down: Elijah knew that he had encountered God’s whispering voice but understood the power behind it and did exactly as he was told. Amen

Let us Pray

Dear Lord Jesus we proclaim your authority and dominion over all things and acclaim you as The one and only true Son of God. We do not need any further proofs of these truths and pray that all of mankind will come through faith alone to recognize you as their Lord and saviour. Amen.

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).

Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future. We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Rector and believe you will send us a priest best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith.

Amen
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us and all those whom we love and care for, always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

Lord of heaven and earth, as Jesus taught his disciples to be persistent in prayer, give us patience and courage never to lose hope, but always to bring our prayers before you; through Jesus Christ our Lord

Amen
