Ezekiel 33:7-11

Avoiding ways of wickedness

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so, they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.10 “Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of them. How then can we live?”’ 11 Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’

Matthew 18: 15-20 Authority over repentance and forgiveness

15 “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.18 “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Thought for the Day

Ezekiel is described as a glorious book. The writings of this Old Testament Prophet deserve special attention as he defines healing, pastoral and counselling relationships. A book of revelation of a God of huge tenderness and infinite loving kindness. “I sat where they sat”3.15 are words that have inspired pastors over the years. That experience can take any “loving our neighbours”, especially those in need, into committed action. All 44 chapters in the most modern version are worth a regular read to keep our Christian pilgrimage on a disciplined course. It presents a most remarkable tender picture of the infinitely caring love of God: “I myself will tend my flock, I myself pen them in their fold, says the Lord God. I will search for the lost, recover the straggler, bandage the hurt…” What a promise for September 2023

We find a slight change of emphasis is in the Matthew reading where he records some instruction from Jesus about action in some situations, when necessary, within the fellowship of Christians when they fall out!! O yes, they do! All of us who are in the same bundle of Christian life and fellowship are intended and invited to experience the love of God and seek to follow and be like Jesus, however It all is not all sweetness and light. Here there is a warning and illustration of a very complex way to resolve issues with any” brother”, or sister (we must add in this day of enlightenment), who are thought to be “sinning against us”. Matthew also appears to record in verse 18 that what we do not sort out now will follow us into eternity, No thank you.
We learn in these readings for today that some correction and teaching about how to behave as people of faith was needed in Old Testament and New Testament times and presumably should guide us today in 2023 otherwise what is the point of our weekly attention to what the Bible says every Sunday morning??

However, it is obvious that our faith has to be lived out on Monday and in our individual lives day by day and justice is a necessary concept that needs to become re embedded in every aspect of our lives. We live in a world and society where few of us are not troubled by the sense of injustice and insecurity the lack of integrity in low and high places the ducking and diving to avoid the truth and the apparent lack of ability to walk the moral high ground which are illustrated daily on TV news or most of the daily papers. Currently the NHS and Ministry of Justice are prime examples.
Thank God we can always return to the example and teaching of Jesus and truths from the Bible today. He is STILL the God Ezekiel experienced where all goodness can be seen.

All this unavoidable negativity that we have to live with leaves a huge gap to be filled by those who seek to do good and live justly. The example by the Ezekiel’s of this generation and the unpacking of the true meaning of the passage from Matthew may illustrate a gap that we at St Johns are called to help fill. How are you and I going to do that in the months ahead? Answers on a post card to the Church Wardens!

 AMEN

Let us Pray

Dear Lord Jesus guide us along the narrow path of righteousness as we walk with you through life and grant that we may live according to your living example and teaching as we rejoice in the company and saving grace of your Holy Spirit. Amen

Prayer for the interregnum of the Parish of Beaudesert with Henley and Ullenhall (to be said during intercessions).
Almighty and everlasting God as we travel together through this period of interregnum we thank you for your everlasting love for us. Give us strength to accept this time of change and send us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with encouragement and hope for the future. We ask that you will help us to share responsibilities growing in faith and love with one another. We look forward to the appointment of a new Rector and believe you will send us a priest best suited to your disciples in this parish and who will encourage many to join with us on our journey of faith. Amen
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us and all those whom we love and care for, always.

Amen

 The Collect Prayer

Merciful God, your son came to save us on the cross: may we trust in your mercy and know your love, rejoicing in the righteousness that is ours through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
